Understanding The Basics

What Is Preventive Dentistry?

Preventative dentistry refers to the dental treatments that are used to prevent common dental health issues such as tooth decay and periodontal (gum) disease. With proper early intervention and preventative care, a dentist like Dr. Siverson can prevent these common oral health issues, and keep your mouth healthy.

Understanding the Value

The Importance of Regular Cleanings

Regular cleanings are important because they give our team a chance to monitor your oral health, and check for issues like gum disease, tooth decay, teeth grinding, and oral cancer. Coming in for a cleaning every 6 months also allows us to remove plaque and tartar from your teeth, keeping your smile clean and ensuring your teeth remain healthy.

Keep Your Smile Bright

Regular Cleanings & Oral Exams

When you come in for a cleaning, our team of dental hygienists will begin by cleaning away plaque and tartar from your teeth. Then, we’ll polish your teeth and floss to remove any remaining debris. We may also take x-rays, if necessary.

Then, Dr. Siverson will perform a comprehensive oral exam, and look for signs of tooth decay, gum disease and other oral health issues. If you have a clean bill of health, we can go ahead and schedule your next cleaning. But if we notice an issue like a cavity, we’ll discuss it with you, and determine the proper way to resolve the problem.

Strengthen Your Teeth

Fluoride Treatments

Fluoride has the unique ability to help remineralize teeth and reverse the effects of minor decay. The treatment consists of a fluoride liquid that’s painted onto your teeth after they’ve been cleaned. It’s left in place for a few minutes, then it’s washed away. The fluoride helps strengthen your teeth in addition to fighting back against cavities.

Prevent Tooth Decay

Dental Sealants

Dental sealants use a liquid plastic resin, which is applied to your rear teeth after a cleaning. The resin is painted onto your tooth, then hardened with a UV light. This creates a strong, clear barrier that protects your enamel from direct contact with oral bacteria, food particles, and acid. In turn, this prevents cavities from forming. Sealants can protect your teeth for up to 10 years.

Get Peace Of Mind

Oral Cancer Screenings

At Forest Lake Smiles, Dr. Siverson will use intraoral cameras to look for lesions, bumps, discoloration and other potential signs of oral cancer. While this cancer is relatively rare, regular screenings give you peace of mind, and ensure that you can get further treatment if we notice an issue.
